Playing Levels

These levels are only a guide to help players find suitable games. Everyone improves at different rates, and organisers may decide what is appropriate for their session.

Beginner

You're new to beach volleyball or still learning the basics.

Typical characteristics

  • Still learning serving, passing and setting
  • Rallying consistently can be difficult
  • Limited experience of positioning and rotation
  • Looking for relaxed, supportive games

Great for

  • First-time beach players
  • Beginners
  • Casual social sessions

Improver

You understand the basic rules and can keep a rally going most of the time.

Typical characteristics

  • Can serve consistently
  • Basic passing and setting
  • Beginning to attack and block
  • Still developing consistency and game awareness

Great for

  • Social games
  • Learning with more experienced players

Intermediate

You are comfortable playing regular beach volleyball.

Typical characteristics

  • Consistent serve receive
  • Can attack with purpose
  • Understand positioning and transitions
  • Can sustain longer rallies
  • Comfortable with structured 2v2 games

Strong Intermediate

You play regularly and are comfortable in competitive social games.

Typical characteristics

  • Reliable ball control
  • Consistent attacking
  • Reads the game well
  • Good movement and positioning
  • Comfortable against experienced players

Advanced / Competitive

Experienced players who regularly compete or play at a consistently high level.

Typical characteristics

  • Strong technical skills
  • High consistency
  • Tactical understanding
  • Effective attacking and blocking
  • Comfortable in fast, competitive matches

Suitable for

  • Advanced social games
  • Competitive training
